ABSTRACT

Results:

Thirthy nine males and 63 females were included into the study. The average RNFL thickness in the sample study under investigation was 103.21±11.68µ (Range: 77.85 – 134.53µ). The RNFL was thickest in the inferior quadrant; progressively and significantly less in superior, nasal and temporal quadrants (p0.05) There was positive correlation between the refractive error and total macular volume (p=0.009). RSLT and macular thickness and volume parameters were not influenced by the laterality of the eye.

Conclusion:

This normative database of peripapillary RNFL and macular thickness by OCT in healthy Turkish eyes may be a useful guideline for management and further research in diseases of optic nerve and macula.

Material Method:

In this cross-sectional study, the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer and macula of 203 consecutive, randomly selected normal eyes were imaged on OCT 3, in Beyoglu Eye Research and Training Hospital. Thickness of the peripapillary RNFL was determined with three 3.46 mm diameter circle OCT scan. Macular thickness was measured with 6 radial scans of the macula. The normality of the collected data was tested with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test; and the influence of age, gender and refractive error was evaluated on various measured parameters using unpaired t-test, one-way analysis of varience and Person’s correlation coefficient.

Purpose:

To determine the normative values for peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness and volume by Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT 3) in healthy Turkish eyes.
